What Is a Good Disc to Cut Aluminum With?

Sometimes projects around the home or garden call for you to work with materials that you might not be familiar with. When you work with a new material such as aluminum for the first time, you must use the right tools for the job to obtain satisfactory results. This doesn't mean going out and replacing your entire toolbox. Instead, you just have to buy a few specialized blades and discs to use in your existing tools.
  1. Stone Discs

    • Don't use a regular grinding disc that you use for cutting steel on aluminum products. The problem is that all the tiny shavings created when cutting aluminum can clog the tool. Instead, use a disc designed to cut something that produces a lot of debris. While there are discs specifically rated for cutting aluminum, discs designed for cutting stone also work adequately well.

    Rubber Wheels

    • Specialized rubber wheels are sometimes used to grind and cut aluminum. Rubber is one of the many agents that is used to bond together grinding wheels. Rubber allows manufacturers to make cut-off wheels that are suitable for extremely fine work. It doesn't degrade the metal being cut and provides a smooth cut that is practical for precision work and softer metals, both of which apply to aluminum cutting.

    Multi-Material Discs

    • There are certain discs sold for use with angle grinders designed to work well with a wide variety of materials. Some discs are formulated with materials that are strong enough to cut through dense materials such as steel and also to cut through the lighter aluminum without damaging the disc. Always read the packaging material for a cutting disc as the manufacturer should indicate whether or not it is suitable for cutting aluminum.

    Silicone Carbide

    • Silicone carbide is a common material used to make gritty cutting wheels. The sharpness of the material is what makes it a good material for cutting through the soft aluminum. The material can shear through the aluminum quickly without leaving burrs or uneven edges on the cut edges. Black silicone carbide discs are good for cutting aluminum and other similar products such as brass.
