How to Customize Your Own Case

Cases can be used as storage for tools and sensitive equipment such as electronics or camera gear. Many tools and pieces of gear come with custom-fitted cases, and you can customize a case to suit your needs for those that do not. There are two main facets to case customization: First, making sure the case cradles your gear with care; second, creating the right look to match your other tools or cases, or just to make a statement.

Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the case and divide it by one inch. Measure the width and depth of the case. Cut enough pieces of one-inch thick foam to the inside dimensions of the case, using a utility knife to fill the case completely.

    • 2

Lay out your tools or gear on a piece of the foam. Trace around each piece and cut out the outline. Measure the height of your gear and trace and cut enough pieces to create a cutout deep enough to encase the tool. Leave at least two pieces uncut.

    • 3

Measure the depth of the bottom half of the case. Apply spray glue to the bottom face of one of the cut out pieces and mount it onto an uncut piece. Glue and add pieces to create an insert as thick as the bottom half of the case is deep. Spray glue on the bottom face of the uncut piece and fit it into the bottom half of the case. Create a second insert for the top and install it the same way.

Wipe the outside of the case with a rag wet with vinegar and water to remove any oil or dust from the surface that might keep the spray paint from adhering properly. Allow the case to dry completely.

    • 5

Tape off hinges, latches, handles --- anything you do not want painted --- with masking tape to shield it. Open the case and lay it inside down on a drop cloth or plastic sheet.

    • 6

Shake a can of spray primer thoroughly and apply a coat over the entire surface of the cases exterior. Hold the can eight-to-10 inches from the surface. Work in short bursts, moving the can in short brush like strokes. Overlap the strokes for adequate coverage, keeping the can moving to prevent runs and drips.

Allow the primer to dry for one hour. Shake spray paint in your choice of colors for at least 60 seconds. Apply two coats of color to the case, using the same technique you used for applying the primer. Allow two hours between coats for drying. Remove the tape immediately as soon as you are done painting.
