How to Cut Through Rock With a Diamond Saw Blade

Installing stone patios, decks, walkways and decorative areas often involves the need to cut rock and stone to fit in certain areas. Each builder or contractor may have his own way of doing this, from chiseling through to using rock guillotines. One of the most popular methods is to use a diamond saw blade, which is designed to withstand cutting through hard material such as rock. You must use this blade with a wet saw, which provides a constant stream of water to lubricate the cutting surface, protecting the blade and the user.

Instructions

    • 1

Carefully measure and mark the line that you need to cut before you begin your procedure. Then set the rock onto the saw table and clamp it into place. You must hold the rock firmly in place with clamps so that it does not shift while cutting.

    • 2

Activate the wet saw with the diamond blade attached, following manufacturer's instructions. Give the machine time to warm up and inspect both sides of the saw to make sure that water is running freely down both sides. The water must run down both sides or you will damage the saw or the rock.

Gently lower the blade to the surface of the rock. Do not force the blade through; rather, allow the teeth to gently cut through the surface and work down into the rock. Apply only light pressure to ensure the blade stays on the right path and gradually works its way through.

    • 4

Cut halfway through the rock and deactivate the blade. Turn the rock over and clamp it down again. Repeat the cutting procedure from the other side of the rock, until you have completed the cut. This will lessen the chance of the saw slipping or incurring damage during the cutting procedure.

Deactivate and remove the power source from the saw before leaving it unattended.
