How to Cut Aluminum With Lube

Aluminum can be used for many different purposes, including siding, sheet metal, door frames, gutters, building materials, duct work and roofing materials. You can cut aluminum with regular aluminum snips or a circular saw. The circular saw requires the assistance of a lubricant to properly cut the metal and to prevent burning up the saw blade. Lubricating wax is the choice of most manufacturers for this purpose.

  • Measuring tape
  • Straightedge
  • Black felt-tip marker

Instructions

    • 1

Place the saw horses in a safe cutting location and place the aluminum onto the saw horses. Measure out the desired measurement onto the piece of aluminum. Mark the measurement with a straightedge and a black felt-tip marker

    • 2

Clamp each side of the aluminum to the saw horses with a C-clamp. Install the carbide-tip saw blade to the circular saw. Add the lubricating wax to the marked measurement line on the aluminum and to the carbide-tip saw blade.

    • 3

Hook the circular saw up to a power source and begin cutting across the marked measurement line with the carbide-tip saw blade. If the blade stops cutting through the aluminum or slows down, add more lubricating wax to the measurement mark and to the saw blade.

    • 4

Continue cutting the aluminum until it has been completely cut. Shut the saw off and unhook it from the power source. Inspect the cut on the aluminum to ensure that it is cut in a straight line. Wipe away any excess lubricating wax from the aluminum cuts and the saw blade with a clean rag.
