How to Adjust a Link V Belt

Link V-belts are a viable alternative to a fitted V-belt, because the length of the belt is adjustable to the size required for the belt's application. Link V-belt usage eliminates the need to waste time shopping for a manufacturer's specified replacement belt. A big bonus that comes along with using a link V-belt is that this belt helps eliminate the vibration in power tools, such as table saws, increasing the tool's cutting accuracy. Adjusting a link in the V-belt is simple, and only takes a few minutes.

Instructions

  1. Adjusting the Size of the Belt

    • 1

Determine the length of the belt by following the directions in the belt manufacturer's installation instruction manual.

    • 2

Remove enough links from the link V-belt to achieve the desired belt size. Measure against the old belt if you have it. Make note that the older belt may be slightly larger than needed because of stretching with use and time.

    • 3

Attach one end of the link V-belt to the other end of the belt following the V-belt manufacturer's instructions, as link attachment differs by manufacturer.

    Adjusting Belt Tension

    • 4

Determine the direction of rotation of the machine requiring the belt installation.

    • 5

Align the directional arrows on the belt with the machine's rotation and install the V-belt on the grooved pulleys of the machine, ensuring that the V-shaped portion of the link V-belt sits in the grooved portion of the pulleys.

    • 6

Adjust the tension on the installed link V-belt by separating the distance between the pulleys, following the instructions in the machine manufacturer's owner's manual until achieving the desired belt tension. Lock the pulleys in place.
