How to Tie Cords for Storage

Cords are commonly used around the home and workplace for hanging items, securing items and for transporting electricity. Proper storage reduces tangles in the cords and allows them to hang on a wall or fit into a small space. The cords are gathered into a pattern and tied with a simple knot. The knot is designed to allow the cords to be quickly unraveled when in use. Storing cords in an organized fashion reduces clutter, prevents people from tripping over the tangled cords and extends the life of the cord by eliminating kinks.

Instructions

  1. Zip Tie

    • 1

Lay the cord on the ground and spread it out to ensure that it does not coil and tangle while bundling.

    • 2

Grab one end of the cord and hold your arm to create a right angle between the forearm and bicep. Wrap the cord around your elbow to create an even bundle.

    • 3

Stop once you have reached the end of the cord. Grasp the wrapped cord to ensure that it does not fall apart. Fasten two zip ties around opposite ends of the bundle to hold it in place.

    Cord Knot

    • 4

Spread out the cord to prevent it from tangling. Grab one end of the cord with your right hand and loosely hold the rest of cord with your left hand.

    • 5

Pull with the right hand to slide the cord through the left hand. Stop once you have reached an arm's length and pass the cord from the left hand to the right hand to create a loop. Repeat the process until the majority of the cord is bundled and one foot is remaining.

    • 6

Wrap the loose end of the cord around the middle of the bundle several times. Slide the free end of the cord under one of the wraps and pull it tight to create a knot around the bundle.
