How to Use a Drywall Screwdriver

Drywall screws have special fluted heads to support the weight of a board. The key to maximizing their effectiveness is to install the screws to the correct depth. If the screw penetrates too deep, it will pop through the paper surface of the drywall. If the screw does not penetrate deep enough, it will be visible after the surfaces are finished and painted. It's also important to install enough screws to support the weight of the drywall. Typically, installing screws every eight inches along each stud that the drywall covers is sufficient.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the screw over where you want to install it.

    • 2

Use the screwdriver to install the screw by turning it clockwise.

    • 3

Stop turning the screwdriver when the head of the screw forms a gentle depression on the paper surface of the drywall. If you penetrate too far, the head will break the paper, meaning the screw will no longer be supporting the drywall. If this happens, back the screw out and install it again at a nearby spot.
