How to Raise a Tower Crane

A tower crane is used on construction sites to transport materials from one height to another. It's essential when building high-rise structures, in places where a regular wheel-mounted crane is not capable of carrying out what is required. Raising a tower crane must be done only by people who have been well trained in its assembly, as the task could cause much damage and loss if carried out incorrectly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Excavate a pit for the tower crane base and fill it with concrete. Sink steel anchors into the concrete; these will hold the first section of the crane's mast in place. Let the concrete cure for 24 hours.

    • 2

Bolt the first section of mast to the anchors. Use the spirit level to make sure that the mast is perfectly vertical.

    • 3

Bolt another section of mast atop the one beneath it. Continue adding mast sections until it reaches the desired height. You will need to use a telescopic boom or a scissor lift for this step.

    • 4

Assemble the crane's jibs -- the horizontal sections that hold the lifting chains on one end and the counterweights on the other. Lift these into place using another crane and fix them securely with steel bolts.

    • 5

Test the crane by loading it to full capacity. Once the crane passes the test, you can use it.
