Engine Specifications

• The STIHL 044 model has a single cylinder two-stroke engine with a 4.31 cubic inch displacement, 1.97 inch bore, 1.42 inch stroke. The idle speed is 2,500 rotations per minute and the maximum engine speed is 13,500 rotations per minute.

Ignition System

• The STIHL 044 has an electronic magneto ignition system. The magneto uses magnetism to supply electricity in the engine, instead of using battery which some small engines require. The spark plug is a Bosch WSR 6 F or NGK BPMR 7 A with a heat range of 200. The electrode gap of the spark plug is 0.5mm (0.02 in.), with a thread M 14xx1.25 and 9.5mm (0.37 in.) long.

Fuel System

• The fuel system has an all-position diaphragm carburetor with an integral fuel pump. The STIHL 044 has both a prefilter air filter and a bi-sectional box-filter. The fuel tank holds 1.69 pints and the oil tank holds 0.7 pints. The manufacturer recommended STIHL 50:1 two-stroke engine oil. This oil is specially formulated for STIHL engines.

Bar and Chain

• When using a chainsaw, many factors can produce a kickback effect, which can cause the operator to lose control of the chainsaw. STIHL developed a reduced kickback bar and a low kickback chain to reduce the chances of the saw kicking back and injuring the operator while in use. STHIL marks these items with a green label. The low kickback bar comes in 16-, 18-, and 2- inch lengths.
