How to Repaint a Playground

Repainting a playground can breathe new life into a neighborhood. When a playground loses its luster, it's time to repaint and refurbish. The task may be large, depending on the size of the playground and the equipment included. Keep the cost of the project in mind before starting. Even with the best of intentions in mind, always get the proper permission before undertaking the task, and take out any permits that might be necessary for the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the types of equipment and needed supplies. A single playground may include equipment made of wood, PVC and metal. Each of these requires a different type of paint. For wood, choose an oil-based paint. For PVC and metal, choose a polymer-based outdoor paint.

    • 2

Remove loose parts of the equipment. Slides, tubes and swings should be removed and placed aside prior to beginning painting.

    • 3

Strip off old paint. Apply paint stripper, using a rag for metal and wood equipment according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Use sandpaper on PVC to remove old paint.

    • 4

Apply a new coat of paint to the apparatus. Use the appropriate paint on each item, and allow to dry for at least 24 hours. Apply a second coat if necessary.

    • 5

Apply clear coat to the equipment to protect the paint from fading and chipping. Allow to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

    • 6

Replace slides, swings and other removable pieces to the equipment.
