How to Adjust a Craftsman 10-Inch Band Saw

You can adjust several different parts on a Craftsman tabletop band saw. You can adjust the blade tension to help reduce blade deflection when you cut through wood. You can adjust the angle of the table in relation to the blade to allow you to create angled cuts through the wood. You can also adjust the height of the blade guard to allow you to cut through different thicknesses of wood. These are three basic functions of regular maintenance and usage of a band saw. And you don't need any tools to make these adjustments.

Instructions

  1. Table Angle

    • 1

Locate both table-lock knobs under the table and loosen them with your fingers. Do not remove them from the trunnion slots.

    • 2

Locate the bevel indicator mounted under the table. The bevel indicator displays every degree, and it rests on zero when the table is perpendicular to the saw blade.

    • 3

Push the front of the table down to adjust the angle of the table. Use the bevel indicator to locate the correct degree of angle.

    • 4

Tighten both table-lock knobs with your fingers to lock the table in place.

    Blade Guard

    • 5

Position yourself in front of the band saw and locate the blade guard-lock knob. Turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen it. Do not remove the knob from the housing.

    • 6

Slide the blade guard up with your fingers. Be careful not to run your finger across the blade teeth.

    • 7

Place the wood you plan to cut on the table and butt it up against the saw blade.

    • 8

Lower the blade guard until the roller bearings on the bottom of the guard are approximately 1/8 inch above the wooden surface.

    • 9

Turn the blade guard-lock knob clockwise to lock the guard in place.

    Blade Tension

    • 10

Disconnect the band saw from its power source.

    • 11

Position yourself on the left side of the band saw. Remove the three cover knobs by turning them counterclockwise. One knob is in the bottom right corner, one is in the upper right corner, and the third is on the left side in the middle. Open the cover to expose the band saw wheels and band saw blade.

    • 12

Turn the adjustment knob located on top of the band saw clockwise until you feel resistance and the knob presses up against the washer and sleeve mounted above the top wheel.

    • 13

Turn the wheel and watch the blade. The blade must rotate with the wheel and stay approximately in the center of the wheel. Once tracking properly, secure the cover back into place.
