How to Cut Granite Tile With a Scroll Saw

If you have a masonry blade for your scroll saw, you can cut hard tiles such as granite, porcelain or ceramic. Expect frequent blade changes and expect the process to go slowly. However, with a little patience, you can cut intricate patterns with a scroll saw following the same basic concept as you would when cutting projects out of wood.

Things You'll Need

  • Marker
  • Hand drill
  • Carbide drill bit
  • Masonry blade

Instructions

    • 1

Transfer the pattern onto your granite piece with a marker that contrasts with the color of the tile.

    • 2

Drill holes into the tile where you need to cut out a void inside the pattern and you cannot reach the void by cutting from the edge of the tile. The bit you use must allow room for the blade to fit into the hole.

    • 3

Turn on the scroll saw and position the air tube next to the blade to blow away the granite chips as you cut.

    • 4

Cut away the excess material around the outside edge of your pattern. Cut carefully to stay as close to the line as possible. Do not push too hard, as this will force the blade to deflect.

    • 5

Stop the saw and remove the blade. This process differs slightly, depending on the style of scroll saw you use. Refer to the owner's manual for the exact process.

    • 6

Place the piece of granite on the scroll saw table and insert the blade between one of the drilled holes. Reattach the blade to the scroll saw. Cut the excess material out to match the pattern. Repeat this step for each additional internal recess you must cut.
