How to Build a Sacrificial Fence

A sacrificial fence is a tool used along with a table saw that allows you to better control pieces being cut and protect your table saw's fence. Sacrificial fences should be simply constructed to allow for ease of rebuilding, and should not employ hardware that will impede the travel of the blade.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-by-6-inch poplar board, equal length to the existing table saw fence
  • Two pieces 2-by-4-inch lumber, 6 inches long
  • Four wood screws
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Drill bits

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the fence by holding the two pieces of 2-by-4-inch lumber up against the table saw's metal fence in a vertical position, with the narrow side of the lumber against the table saw fence, and then mark a line on the wood at the height of the fence.

    • 2

Measure the width of the fence, and then transfer that measurement to the 2-by-4-inch lumber. You will be creating a notch in the 2-by-4-inch pieces so that when the sacrificial fence is screwed to them, it will provide a strong clamp to hold the sacrificial fence to the metal fence.

    • 3

Cut the notch into the 2-by-4-inch pieces using the table saw.

    • 4

Hold the first notched 2-by-4 against the sacrificial fence and over the metal fence. This will be the position that the sacrificial fence will be mounted onto the table saw in. Drill two holes through the sacrificial fence and into the notched 2-by-4 with a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws being used to secure the pieces together. Make this notched 2-by-4 about 6 inches from the leading edge of the table saw.

    • 5

Screw the two pieces together, and then hold the second 2-by-4-inch piece against the sacrificial board about 6 inches from the trailing edge of the table saw fence. Drill the holes for the second piece, and then screw it into place as you did the first piece to complete the sacrificial board construction.
