What Tools Do You Need to Drill a Hole in Concrete?

Concrete might be a hard material, but drilling holes in it can be easy and safe if you use the proper tools and equipment. Because of its density, drilling into concrete is more difficult than drilling into brick, wood or metal. Failing to use the right tools can result in bodily harm, cause damage to the concrete and destroy your tools and equipment.
  1. Hammer Drill or Rotary Hammer Drill

    • The most important tool for making a hole in concrete is the drill. You will need a hammer drill or rotary hammer drill to make a clean hole. Don't use a standard drill, because it only rotates the bit and doesn't provide the hammering action needed to break the concrete. A hammer drill chisels concrete but the bit rotates to make a hole. Use a hammer drill to make a hole in masonry or brick and a rotary hammer drill to make a hole in concrete.

    Drill Bits

    • Use concrete or masonry bits specifically designed for hammer drills or rotary hammer drills. Most professionals recommend carbide-tipped bit heads because they are more durable and effective. If you are unsure about what diameter you need to make, or if you need to make multiple diameters, purchase a bit set that features several different sizes.

    Safety Equipment

    • You should wear goggles, a mask and hearing protection when you drill concrete.

Whenever you drill concrete, you will need three safety items: goggles, hearing protection and a dust mask. The goggles will protect your eyes from concrete chips and dust. The mask will keep you from inhaling dust and other fine particles. Hammer drilling is much louder than regular drilling, so hearing protection is an absolute.

    Shop Vacuum and Compressed Air

    • While you're drilling, you're going to create a lot of dust and debris. To keep a clean work area, especially if you're indoors, use a shop vacuum to clean up your mess. Use compressed air to remove dust from the holes you drill.
