How to Use a Sink Wrench

A sink wrench, which is also called a basin wrench, is a special tool designed to access the tight plumbing spaces under a sink. The end of a sink wrench has a C-shaped clasp that grips the nut on the pipe. The handle works as a lever to twist the nut loose from the pipe. The wrench's compact design and longer handle allows it to turn in spaces where standard wrenches can't.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet doors under the sink and clear out any unnecessary items from the area so that you have adequate space to work in.

    • 2

Kneel or sit on the floor and locate the pipe that you want to disconnect or connect. Trace the pipe to where it connects with the wall or another pipe until you find the metal nut.

    • 3

Screw the metal nut into place with your hand if you are attaching a pipe. If you're detaching a pipe, skip this step.

    • 4

Open the black clamps at the end of the sink wrench and slide them around the nut that you are removing or tightening.

    • 5

Locate the thin handle bar that comes with the wrench and insert it into the hole in the bottom of the handle. Some sink wrenches have multiple holes to allow you to choose the most comfortable location.

    • 6

Grip the lower bar firmly with your hand and twist it in a circular motion to loosen or tighten the nut. Turn the bar clockwise to tighten the nut and counterclockwise to loosen it.
