Place your articulated ladder on an even surface, free from mud, snow or ice. Never place your ladder on top of loose material, boxes, barrels or unsecured scaffolding.
Inspect the ladder to ensure it is in working order and clean of rust and grease. Tighten rivets or screws, if loose, and lubricate hinges as necessary using silicon based lubricant.
Consult the manufacturer's directions to determine if your needed configuration is approved for your specific ladder.
Unlock and configure the ladder's hinges as directed by the mandatory instruction label on the ladder. According to the American Ladder Institute every "manufacturer has a unique locking hinge design and each lock must visibly indicate whether it is locked or unlocked."
Lock all hinges tightly before stepping on the articulated ladder. If you need to make adjustments to the ladder's position, step off the ladder, unlock hinges, make the necessary changes and relock the hinges.
