Ryobi 18.0V Drill Change Instructions

Cordless drills typically operate with keyless chucks. Keyless chucks do not require a chuck key for securing a bit inside a drill. Easy-to-grasp keyless chucks feature slotted tips that you turn by hand to loosen and tighten. Keyless chucks are equipped with three-pronged teeth, referred to as collets, that move inward to tighten or outward to release the drill bit shaft. You can only insert drill bits of up to a 1/2-inch shaft in the cordless Ryobi 18.O-volt keyless chucks.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the Ryobi's keyless chuck's upper slotted portion with one hand while holding the drill's handle with the other. Point the chuck away from you while changing bits.

    • 2

Jerk the keyless drill chuck's slotted portion quickly in a clockwise direction to release the collets' holds on the drill bit shaft.

    • 3

Continue turning the chuck in a clockwise direction until you can slide the drill bit out.

    • 4

Slip the new drill bit into the chuck opening, shaft-end first. Open the three chuck teeth wider by turning the chuck tip in a clockwise direction if the shaft of the drill bit is larger in diameter.

    • 5

Grasp the chuck tip and turn it in a counterclockwise direction while the new drill bit is in the chuck. Jerk the chuck's slotted tip counterclockwise to make sure it is fully secured into place.
