How to Connect the Crossbars on Scaffolds

Scaffolding provides a sturdy alternative to working off a ladder. However, you must take care when building scaffolding. Scaffolding consists of outside metal frames, planking and crossbars. The crossbars add stability and keep the scaffolding from collapsing. Properly connected crossbars are essential in scaffold building. Take the time to correctly build your scaffolding.

Instructions

    • 1

Lean a section of scaffolding frame against a wall or ask your helper to hold it. Ensure that the top side is up.

    • 2

Pick up a crossbar set. Grab both poles at one end of the crossbars. Pull the poles apart. The crossbars need to form an "X" shape to fit the pins on the scaffold frame.

    • 3

Lift up the pin guard on the top pin of the scaffold frame. The pin guard is a piece of metal that slides up and down over the pin. Line up the hole at the end of one of the crossbars with the pin.

    • 4

Slide the crossbar onto the pin. Push the crossbar flush against the frame. Push the pin guard down to firmly secure the crossbar into place.

    • 5

Repeat these steps to attach the other crossbar to the bottom pin. Ask your helper to hold the scaffolding.

    • 6

Line up the second section of framing with the crossbars. Attach the crossbars to the top and bottom pins in the same manner as the first side.
