How to Load a Corner Trowel

Loading a corner trowel may seem like a daunting task, and indeed it does take some getting used to. But there is a trick to getting it loaded up just right. To start with, the plaster or mortar you're loading onto the trowel has to be the right consistency. Until you get the hang of loading up the trowel properly, you can use a flat trowel to apply the mortar to the corner, and then smooth it with the corner trowel.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the scrap cardboard with the material you are using with the trowel. There should be enough to only do one corner at a time. Hold the trowel so the pointed end is facing upward.

    • 2

Skim the top of the plaster or mortar with the pointed end of the trowel held at a 45-degree angle. This will draw a small amount of material onto the tip of the trowel, which it will stick to.

    • 3

Starting at the top or bottom of the corner, apply the material with the trowel held at a 30-degree angle, pressing the material into the irregularities of the corner. Skim more material onto the trowel as needed.
