How to Cut Shellac

Shellac is available in premixed cuts of 2-, 3- and 4 lb. cuts. A cut refers to the mixing proportions. The most commonly found pre-mixed cut is a 3 lb. cut which is 3 lbs. of shellac flakes dissolved into 1 gallon of denatured alcohol. Cutting shellac to a thinner consistency provides ease of use when you apply several coats of shellac to your project. It dries faster and applies much easier than a larger cut. Most people prefer a 1 lb. cut of shellac for a shiny mirror image.
