How to Weld Thin Steel Together

Imagine a fire burning in your hands at the temperature of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. While the thought is scary, the electrodes coming out of a welding gun contain temperatures higher than that. Steel needs extremely high temperatures to weld to other pieces of steel and metal. Gas metal arc welding or GMAW is recommended for thin steel because of its continuous wire electrodes. Handle with caution, but easily weld thin steel together using the GMAW technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold one piece of thin steel with pliers. Use pliers to handle the thin steel until it cools.

    • 2

Place the other thin steel in the desired position.

    • 3

Turn the cylinder valve counterclockwise to open it.

    • 4

Place a metal stake in the ground. Squeeze the ends of the ground clamp and clamp it to the metal stake.

    • 5

Aim the welding gun away from your body. Turn on the welding gun.

    • 6

Point the tip of the welding gun 2 inches from the area that you want to weld. Hold the gun until you weld the thin steel together.

    • 7

Turn off the welding gun. Remove the ground clamp from the metal stake. Close the cylinder valve.

    • 8

Grab the thin steel with pliers to move it to another area. Let the thin steel cool.
