How to Use Liquid Levelers

Unlevel subfloors lead to vinyl flooring ripping in the concaves holes and breaking ceramic tiles. Low spots under carpeting and carpet pad will become loose or tear over time. It is important to level your subfloor before laying your choice of flooring to avoid damage to your project. Using a liquid leveler properly includes cleaning and preparing the floor before its application.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the floor with a shop vacuum to remove any dust or dirt particles. Wet a sponge mop and mop the entire floor to clean it. Allow the floor to dry completely.

    • 2

Apply floor primer to the entire floor in an even thin coat with a paint roller and extension pole. Start in one corner and work in sections to the other end of the room walking backward to the entryway. Let the primer dry according the package directions.

    • 3

Place a 4-foot level on the floor starting in one corner of the room. Draw a circle around any low spots that do not touch the level with a carpenter's pencil. These are the areas that need liquid leveler to bring them up to be flush with the floor. Continue moving the level across the room to mark all low spots.

    • 4

Pour the liquid leveler into a bucket and add water according to the package directions. Mix the leveler well for about three minutes. The leveler will be a thin, soupy consistency. Pour the leveler in the circled areas and spread it out even with a trowel. Let the leveler dry completely before laying flooring.
