How to Carry a Pipe

When working in construction, it is very important to take precautions against personal injury. Back injuries in particular can cost you days or even weeks of lost work. If you are in a situation where you must carry heavy pipes, you should use a pipe dolly to assist you. There are two main styles of dollies: those that are shaped like a see-saw on wheels and hang the pipe from chains, and those shaped like baskets that carry pipes like a wagon.

Instructions

  1. Hanging Pipe Dolly

    • 1

Use the end of the dolly to lever the pipe high enough to slip a block of wood under it. The block can be cut from a 2-by-4 or 4-by-4, but should allow a few inches of clearance under the pipe.

    • 2

Roll the dolly over the other side of the pipe, stopping a few feet before the end.

    • 3

Pivot the end of the dolly down toward the pipe.

    • 4

Wrap the chain on the end of the dolly around the pipe, securing it in place on the hook located on the side of the dolly.

    • 5

Push the other end of the dolly down against the end of the pipe with the wooden block. The first end will pivot up, lifting that end of the pipe.

    • 6

Wrap the second chain around the pipe and secure it on the second hook.

    • 7

Lift the end of the dolly that is farthest from the wheels. The end with the wheels will take all of the weight, so you can lift this end fairly easily.

    • 8

Roll the dolly and pipe to its new location. Reverse the process to remove the pipe.

    Basket Dolly

    • 9

Position the basket dolly next to the pipe at the pipe's midpoint.

    • 10

Turn the dolly on its side.

    • 11

Slide the side of the basket under the pipe.

    • 12

Strap the pipe in place on the dolly.

    • 13

Flip the dolly right side up and roll it to the pipe's new location. Reverse the process to remove the pipe.
