How to Resurface Bricks From Moisture

Bricks are porous and absorb liquids that spill on them, as well as moisture from the air. When moisture enters bricks, it weakens them, allowing the bricks to break or crumble. Resurfacing or sealing your brick driveway, sidewalks or patios creates a moisture barrier and promotes a longer lasting surface. Existing brick areas must first be thoroughly cleaned and de-greased for the sealant to adhere.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid masonry de-greaser
  • Garden sprayer
  • Push broom

Instructions

    • 1

Pour liquid masonry de-greaser into a garden sprayer. Screw the lid on the sprayer clockwise. Pump the handle up and down to pressurize the contents.

    • 2

Squeeze the handle on the application wand to administer the de-greaser onto the bricks. Start the application in one corner of the bricks and work in sections to thoroughly wet all of them.

    • 3

Brush the de-greaser into crevices and cracks with a push broom. Let the de-greaser soak into the bricks for the amount of time listed on the package directions.

    • 4

Rinse the de-greaser off the bricks with a garden hose. Let the bricks dry completely.

    • 5

Wash the garden sprayer out thoroughly with water from the garden hose until the water runs clear.

    • 6

Pour masonry sealer into the garden sprayer, replace the lid and pump the handle.

    • 7

Spray masonry sealer onto one section of the bricks. Roll the sealer on the bricks with a paint roller on an extension handle. Start in one section and work walking backward to prevent walking in sealer. Let the sealer dry according to the package directions before walking or driving on the bricks.
