How to Use a Rebar Hickey

Rebar is used as reinforcement on a variety of masonry projects such as concrete footings, slabs and block walls. Rebar usually comes in 20-foot sections. You will need to bend rebar at some time during its installation. You can bend rebar with a rebar hickey. You can buy or rent a rebar hickey at your local building supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a rebar rod down on level ground. Locate the point where the bend will begin. Draw a line at that point with the marker.

    • 2

Hold the rebar hickey in the vertical position. Let the bottom of the hickey bar rest on the ground next to the rebar.

    • 3

Slide the rebar into the slot in the bottom of the rebar hickey. Line your mark up with the bottom edge of the slot. This will be the point where the bend begins. Some rebar hickeys have three pins instead of a slot. If this is the case, then slide the rebar between one of the top pens and the bottom pin. Line your mark up with the top pen.

Stand on the rebar with one foot to hold it to the ground. Pull back on the rebar hickey. The rod will bend as you pull back. Stop pulling when you obtain the desired angle.
