How to Build a Temporary Scaffold

When it comes to most repair and do-it-yourself jobs around the house, a ladder will usually get you where you need to be. But sometimes you need to be positioned where a ladder just can't reach. Such work calls for a temporary scaffold that can be assembled and broken down rather quickly to make your job easier to do. Put your scaffolding on level ground in an area that will accommodate its width and get to working on your project.

Instructions

  1. Ladder Scaffold

    • 1

Make sure that the area in which you are placing the scaffolding is even ground. You can check the ground by using a level. If it is not level, adjust the differences in height by using bricks, patio stones, or specially made pads available at your local supply store. Pads will prevent scratching on the floor as well.

    • 2

Place your first ladder on the right of the area in which you need a scaffolding. Place the second ladder on the left side. Make sure the closest feet of the ladders are only 4 feet apart --- the nearer, the better.

    • 3

Place two planks --- usually two-by-twelves --- between steps on the two ladders at the height you require. You now have a temporary scaffold on which to work.

    Metal Scaffolding

    • 4

Stop by your local home supply store and check out the rental section to see if temporary metal scaffolding is available. You will need metal scaffolding if your height requirements are higher than 6 feet and you are going to be working with a partner.

    • 5

Measure the necessary area for the scaffolding and check for the levelness of the ground. Set up the stand bottoms at the four corners and begin to screw in the poles.

    • 6

Use the levels on top of each pole that are put in place to can check for evenness. Then attach the couplings, which will have four holes: one each for the upper and lower support, and two for either side of the scaffolding.

    • 7

Attach the connector poles and test your scaffolding for steadfastness. Repeat this process until you achieve the height you require. Then lay your planks across the beams of the scaffolding.
