Vinyl Baseboard Molding Tools

Vinyl baseboards are used in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, commercial buildings and homes. This type of baseboard molding is used because it is resistant to scrapes, scratches and other abuse. This type of molding works especially well with carpet or vinyl flooring. Most homeowners choose to use vinyl baseboard molding in bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms that see a lot of use.
  1. Measuring Tape

    • When installing vinyl baseboard, you will need a measuring tape. Recruit a friend to help you use the measuring tape. This is important because it can be difficult to hold the measuring tape in place while you are taking down the measurement at the opposite end of the tape. Measure the wall where the vinyl baseboards are going to be installed. Take the measurement down to the closest 1/16th of an inch.

    Pencil

    • You will need to do a lot of pencil work during vinyl baseboard installation. Use a pencil to make these necessary measurement marks on the baseboards. After you have taken the measurements with a measuring tape, use a pencil to mark the measurements on the vinyl baseboards. The pencil marks will help you to cut the vinyl baseboards to size prior to installation on the wall. A pencil can also be used to write down the measurements so that you can purchase the right amount of vinyl at your local home improvement center.

Utility Knife, Metal Square and Scrap Wood

    • Cutting is a big part of vinyl baseboard installation. The vinyl baseboards are purchased in long sections that are cut into smaller sections and then glued into place. A utility knife can be used to cut the vinyl to size. Set a metal square on top of the vinyl and line it up with the marked measurement on the vinyl. The square will help you cut a straight line in the vinyl. Always cut the vinyl on top of a piece of scrap wood so that you do not damage your flooring.

    Adhesive and Caulk Gun

    • Construction adhesive is typically used to glue the vinyl baseboards to the wall. Most construction adhesive comes in a tube that is similar to a caulk tube. This makes it easy to use a caulk gun for dispensing the adhesive. Cut off the tip of the plastic tube with a utility knife. Press the trigger on the caulk gun to dispense the caulk onto the back of the vinyl baseboards.
