How to Size a Regulator

Regulators are devices used to control the pressure at which a gas or liquid is held or distributed from a container. Some of these devices give a numeric read out to show at what pressure the liquid or gas is in the container. They can all be adjusted to maintain a certain pressure for the container to keep the liquid or gas at optimal levels. Choosing the correct regulator is determined by the pressure being distributed through the regulator, rather than the size of the pipe the regulator is attached.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult a regulator sizing chart for the type of regulator you want. Many hardware stores, online retailers, and manufacturers offer sizing charts for regulators that can be viewed or downloaded from the Internet. Several different types and brands of regulators are available to consumers that all regulate flow and pressure. Know how you want to use the regulator and what sizing options are available.

    • 2

Compare your inlet pressure measurement to the specifications for the regulators on your regulator sizing chart. This is the measurement of the pressure that goes in to the regulator. Your chosen regulator should fall well within the parameters for inlet pressure. Purchasing a regulator not able to handle the pressure being put into it can cause malfunction of the regulator.

    • 3

Compare your numerical pressure setting to the measurements listed for regulators on your sizing chart. The pressure setting measurement should reflect the required downstream pressure required for use of the regulator. The regulator you choose should now match both your inlet pressure and pressure setting requirements.

    • 4

Determine the flow rate required for operation of the regulator and match that value to the specifications for regulators on your sizing chart. The flow rate reflects how quickly the gas or liquid is allowed to leave the container through the regulator. Purchase a regulator that matches all three of the listed criteria.
