The Best Types of Brushes for Sansin Stains

The Sansin Corporation manufactures a line of environmentally-friendly, low VOC (volatile organic compound) wood stains for both interior and exterior use. Rather than forming a film on the wood surface, like other wood finishes, Sansin stains penetrate wood and protect it from within. This allows the wood to breathe, expand and contract naturally and prevents moisture from becoming trapped within. Most Sansin stains can be applied with a sprayer or brush. If using a brush, select one with synthetic bristles appropriate for water-based materials.
  1. Nylon

    • High quality nylon brushes are a durable choice, standing up to extended use and contact with smooth or rough surfaces. Because their tips do not deteriorate, they apply stain smoothly and minimize brush marks. Modified nylon bristles feature tapered ends that offer even smoother application. The down-side to nylon brushes is that they tend to become too flexible or limp over time.

    Polyester

    • Stiffer than nylon, polyester brushes do not become limp. They are, however, more prone to leaving brush marks and deteriorate faster than nylon. Once they begin to break down, the brush marks they leave become more apparent. They are also more difficult to clean.

    Polyester Nylon Blends

    • Combining the stiffness of polyester with the durability and smooth application of nylon, these brushes are a good compromise between the two materials. They are long-lasting and easy to clean.

    Foam Pads

    • According to Sansin, pad applicators can also be used with its stains. These are not brushes at all but foam products specifically designed to apply smooth, even coats of water-based stain. Their density allows the stain to evenly release from the foam with light pressure. They are also durable and can be reused after a through cleaning with soap and water.
