How to Use a Folding Ruler

The folding ruler was created in 1851. In a time before modern tape measures it was the first technology of its kind to support adjustable measurements. Folding rulers come in various lengths and styles to accommodate jobs that require different measurements. Folding rulers are still in use today despite innovations in the field due to their sturdiness and reliability.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess the object that needs to be measured. The amount of ruler length used will be largely determined by this assessment.

    • 2

Unfold the lengths of the ruler to match the object being measured. The ruler will be stacked on top of itself. You may need to pull out multiple lengths to reach the required measurement.

    • 3

Place the folding ruler on the object with the first length starting on either end. Place the folding ruler on its side to ensure an accurate reading.

    • 4

Read the measurement indicated by the marks and numbers written on the folding ruler.
