How to Use a Super Taper

The Super Taper by Better Than Ever Tools is a device that makes it easier to apply joint tape used to create a smooth edge between two panels of sheetrock or drywall. It attaches to a pail of joint compound or "taping mud," so that you can use it to pass your drywall tape through the compound and give it an even coating before you affix it to the surfaces you are joining. You can control and change the amount of compound that you apply to your tape by adjusting your Super Taper.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your rubber gloves and safety goggles.

    • 2

Mix your joint compound in a five-gallon pail so that it is about the consistency of thin pancake batter, or a bit thicker than wall paint. Follow the directions for your joint compound if you need to thin it with water or another additive.

    • 3

Place the hollow core of your roll of drywall tape over the spindle that is located on the frame of the Super Taper, at a right angle to the roller assembly.

    • 4

Pull the black hinge on the top panel upward to open the top of your Super Taper, then slide the top panel off the frame of the taper.

    • 5

Pull the edge of the tape out and thread it over the middle roller (the roller directly above the spindle) before threading it under and then over the bottom roller at the far end of the roller assembly.

    • 6

Thread the tape out over the top of the stainless steel roller bar and then lay it on top of the upper roller at the end of the roller bar.

    • 7

Replace the top of your Super Taper and press it down to make sure it is locked into place.

    • 8

Clip your Super Taper onto the edge of your five-gallon pail of joint compound.

    • 9

Pull the tape through the Super Taper into your bucket, making sure that it has an even covering of joint compound. Loosen the adjustment screw on the angled part of the taper with a screwdriver if the coat is too thick and skips part of the tape. Thin the mixture again if the problem remains. Tighten the screw if an insufficient amount of compound adheres to the tape.

    • 10

Press the tape at the joints and any other flat part of your walls or ceilings that you want to seal to the surface of the sheetrock with your gloved fingers and then pull it tightly as you cover the length or height of the joint. Wipe your joints with a 10-inch drywall compound knife to remove excess compound.

    • 11

Crease the tape into corners and remove excess compound using the Better Than Ever Corner Tool or an angled trowel. You can use the Better Than Ever 2-inch flushing tool to make sure any tape you install at the bottom of your walls is even with your floor.

    • 12

Allow all tape to dry as per joint compound manufacturer recommendations. Apply a finish coat of joint compound if necessary, allow this coat to dry, and then finish your sheetrock with paint, paneling or wallpaper as desired.
