How to Use a Cement Chipper

A cement chipper, more commonly known as a cement saw or a cement cutter, is a piece of machinery used to remove concrete. These machines use diamond blades that cut into the concrete, loosening it from the area in which it is located. Cement chippers or saws will generally come equipped with a water reservoir and spray jet to cool the blade as it cuts into concrete.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that there is plenty of gas in the fuel tank and, if so equipped, water in the reservoir.

    • 2

Set the depth of the cutting blade using the depth control lever. For best results, measure the thickness of the concrete and set the blade to the same depth. For example, if the concrete is 4 inches thick, set the blade depth to 4 inches.

    • 3

Release the parking brake on the cement chipper, if applicable.

    • 4

Position the cement chipper's blade along the line being cut. Lower the pointer on the front of the machine to help guide you as you cut into the concrete. This is a long rod on the front of the cement chipper.

    • 5

Engage the depth indicator, which monitors the depth of the cut as you operate the chipper.

    • 6

Lower the cement saw until the blade is resting on the concrete, then turn the depth indicator dial to "00" or "Zero."

    • 7

Bring the saw up to its maximum height -- the blade will lower back into position. Check the cutting depth.

    • 8

Raise the blade a second time to its highest position. Check that the "Start" and "Emergency Shut Off" switches are both in the "ON" position.

    • 9

Put on goggles, a dust mask and gloves.

    • 10

Start the cement chipper's engine, then open the water control valve on the machine. Lower the blade and begin cutting into the concrete, using the pointer as a visual guide.
