Adjust the size of the chuck attached to the drill press so that it is large enough to accomodate the size of the carbide bit. Insert the smooth end of the carbide bit into the chuck and tighten it into place with the key.
Mark the section on the steel that you want to drill with a marker.
Ensure that the drill is in the off position. Center the steep piece onto the drill press table. Adjust the bit over the mark on the steel.
Arrange the clamps over the steel with the top end placed over the steel piece to be drilled and the bottom end under the table. Tighten the clamps to the drill press table to secure the steel piece in place.
Turn on the drill press. Lower the carbide bit into the steel by pulling down on the lowering lever of the drill press. Press the lever down forcefully until the bit penetrates the hardened steel and keep pressure on the lever until the bit makes it through the steel.
Remove the clamps and remove the hardened steel piece.
