How to Troubleshoot a Desulfator

A desulfator is a device that removes sulfation from old batteries. Over the lifetime of a battery it will accrue a buildup of a chemical called sulfate. This increasingly diminishes the charging capacity of a battery. A desulfator uses sequential charges of electricity, or pulses, to dislodge this chemical buildup. As the desulfator removes sulfation, the battery might regain some of its lost capacity. Regular care and inspection of a desulfator device can help optimize its continued performance.

Instructions

Check the electrical outlet the unit is plugged into if the power indicator fails to light. If the outlet is controlled by a switch, ensure the switch is in the "on" position. Avoid accidentally turning the switch off while the unit is operating.

    • 2

Leave the battery connected to the unit in Maintenance-Float mode for at least 72 hours if the battery condition indicator light is yellow after fully charging the battery. After at least 72 hours, press the "Start / Reset / Stop" stop button. If the indicator light is still yellow, repeat the process. A yellow indicator light on a fully charged battery indicates the battery still has unacceptable levels of sulfation.

Reset the unit if the "error" and "charge" light blink simultaneously. This is an indication the charger has timed out before the battery has completely charged. Press and hold the "Reset" button until all LEDs (light-emitting diodes) flash. Press the "Start" button to begin charging again.
