How to Run the Engine on a Portable Generator Without Producing Power

Portable generators operate with unleaded gas and are designed to run at idle speed until an electrical load is demanded. This "auto-throttle" system ensures the generator ceases producing power when all electrical loads are turned off or disconnected. Alternatively, some models have a manually controlled circuit breaker that allows the operator to switch the power from "off" to either "120 volt" or "120/240 volt," controlling when and how much power is produced by the generator.

Instructions

  1. Generators Equipped With Auto-throttle

    • 1

Unplug any appliances from the power panel.

    • 2

Push the start button or pull the pull-start cord to start the engine. The engine will remain at idle speed.

    • 3

Plug in 120- or 240-volt appliances into the power panel to automatically engage the generator. The generator will throttle up to full power to power the appliances or tools.

    Manual Circuit Breaker Generators

    • 4

Unplug any appliances from the power panel.

    • 5

Flip the circuit breaker switch to the "off" position.

    • 6

Push the start button or pull the pull-start cord to start the engine.

    • 7

Switch the circuit breaker to "on" to engage the generator. The generator will throttle up to and begin to produce power, powering any 120- or 240-volt appliances plugged into the power panel.
