How to Hold a Right Angle Grinder

A right angle grinder can be a dangerous tool to employ if not used correctly. The high-speed spinning discs can abrade skin upon contact, causing serious injury with the slightest of touch. Knowing how to hold the angle grinder is an important safety step in the grinder's use. With the right hold, you'll have the greatest amount of control over the grinder's movement, keeping the disc on target and off your body.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in front of the surface on which you intend to use the angle grinder with your feet comfortably apart, about at shoulder width, and your body balanced.

    • 2

Hold the body of the grinder in your left hand with your fingers over the trigger. Screw the padded handle into the right side of the grinder body -- it screws in perpendicular to the body of the tool. Hold the handle of the grinder in your right hand to stead it and give you additional control over the grinder movement.

    • 3

Start the grinder and wait a few seconds, between three and five for the grinder to rev up to speed. Press the right angle grinder disc against the grinding surface, holding it against the surface at an angle between 15 and 30 degrees. Use a small amount of pressure to hold the disc in place to avoid inadvertent movements. Watch the disc as you grind to avoid bumping into any adjacent surfaces, since this can cause the angle grinder to kick back, touching you with the disc and causing possible serious injury.

Remove the grinder disc from the surface when you've completed grinding. Release the trigger to stop the disc from moving before setting the grinder down.
