How to Troubleshoot a John Crane Seal

John Crane mechanical seals are designed for use in the oil, gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, industrial and mining sectors. These seals are manufactured in a variety of shapes and sizes for various pumps serving different functions. Despite the quality and reliability of John Crane mechanical seals, they may become worn down or fail to perform as expected. Consequently, it is important to know how to quickly diagnose the issue to prevent work delays or customer inconveniences.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the mechanical conditions of the shaft if you find that the seal is wearing out the pump. Ensure that the shaft is straight and check the squareness of the stuffing box face to the shaft center line.

    • 2

Check that the flush line is clear and the flush port is as close to the face of the seal as possible, if you find that the seal is burned-out.

    • 3

Insert an abrasives or filter into the flush line if you find that the seal is worn out. This will prevent dirt, rust or abrasive particles contained in the pumped liquid from accumulating in the seal cavity.
