Oxy-Acetylene Torch Safety

An oxy-acetylene torch ignites a mix of oxygen and acetylene to create a flame. This welding tool can cause serious burns, fires, asphyxiation or explosions if used in an unsafe manner.
  1. Preparations

    • Before operating an oxy-acetylene torch, users should familiarize themselves with its safety documentation. They should then move the hoses away from the flame zone and release any trapped oxygen from the gas lines. RobotWorx Welding Division also recommends the use of leather gloves, work boots and other flameproof clothing.

    Operation

    • To operate an oxy-acetylene torch safely, users should first open the tank valves, taking care to stand away from the gauges. They should then open the torch valve as little as possible, using a spark lighter and a minimal supply of oxygen get make a flame about eight inches in length. This kind of welding should never occur in completely-enclosed areas where the oxygen can run out.

    Emergencies

    • Welders should guard against the risk of a hose or other item catching fire from an oxy-acetylene torch. Standard extinguishing supplies to keep on hand in case of fire include sand and wet cloths.
