How to Read a Probe Gauge

A probe gauge, also known as a dial gauge or indicator, is an instrument commonly used to measure small linear distances. Millwrights often use this tool when working with metal parts of machinery. To read a probe gauge, or dial indicator, it is important to understand the small dial and large dial on the gauge. A larger dial is used to measure in .001-inch increments and the smaller dial shows a single revolution of the larger dial in .100.

  Turn the button on the top of the probe gauge until both dials are set to a "0."

  Keep track of both dials, the smaller dial will track the larger dial. Find an item to measure and watch the dials move.

  Read the dials while you are measuring an item. If the small dial is sitting on the 5 and the large dial is on the 70, then the measurement would be 0.570-inch. If the small dial is pointing to the 6 and the large dial on the 10, then the measurement is 0.610-inch.
