How To Use a Wheeler Snap Cutter

Cast iron pipes were commonly used in older homes and buildings in the 19th and 20th centuries to transport gas, water and sewage. While it is known for its strength and ability to hold up well over time, it is also brittle. This makes it hard for plumbers and homeowners to successfully cut through it. Homeowners and plumbers commonly use a Wheeler snap cutter to make a clean cut through cast iron pipe.

Instructions

    • 1

Use soapstone to mark the pipe where you would like to make the cut.

    • 2

Hook the chain of the Wheeler snap cutter around the pipe where you made your mark. Pull the handles of the snap cutter apart and attach the chain found on one handle into the hook on the other handle.

    • 3

Place the handle that has the chain attached to it onto the floor and begin applying pressure on the other handle quickly to snap through the cast iron pipe.

    • 4

Pull the Wheeler snap cutter away from the pipe and unhook the chain to get it ready for another cut, if more than one cut is necessary.
