How to Attach a Sling to a Lifting Hook

A sling is a section of wire rope that connects the object to be lifted with the lifting hook. The wire has an eyelet loop on each end and has a metallic tag that states its manufacturer and weight limit. Slings are attached to the lifting hook via a vertical, choker or basket hitch. Factors like load diameter, diameter of the lifting hook pin, and the angle at which the sling is used should be calculated into a lift, prior to lifting, by a trained technician or rigging engineer.

Instructions

  1. Vertical Hitch

    • 1

Slip the lifting hook through one eyelet.

    • 2

Slip the opposite eyelet through the lifting hook on the load.

    • 3

Loop a long rope around all four corners of the load to control it as it's lifted. These ancillary ropes are called "tag lines."

    Choked Hitch

    • 4

Wrap the sling around the load.

    • 5

Feed one eyelet through the other to close a loop around the load, "choking" it.

    • 6

Pull the eyelet that was fed through, vertically, and slip it onto the lifting hook.

    Basket Hitch

    • 7

Slip one eyelet through the lifting hook on the boom.

    • 8

Wrap the lifting strap around the bottom of object to be lifted.

    • 9

Bring the open eyelet from the bottom of the object, up to the lifting hook, and slip it on to complete the basket hitch.
