How to Disassemble a Stihl MS270

The MS-270, more commonly known as the Wood Boss, is a mid-range chainsaw manufactured by Stihl. The Wood Boss comes equipped with a two-cycle, 50 cc engine, a self-oiling chain and an advanced anti-vibration system. Even in normal use, chainsaws can become very dirty and covered in sawdust. Whether it's for cleaning or repair, there will likely come a time when you will have to disassemble the chainsaw.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the gas tank and pour the gas into a drip pan. Replace the gas cap once the tank is drained. Open and drain the chain oiler tank into a separate container, then replace the cap.

    • 2

Slip the spark plug boot off with pliers, then remove the plug with a spark plug wrench.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the saw's front handle in place using an Allen wrench. Set the handle and screws aside.

    • 4

Disengage the chain brake and remove the sprocket cover. Loosen the tension screw and slip the chain off the bar. Remove the nuts holding the bar in place with a wrench.

    • 5

Remove the nuts holding the recoil starter in place and remove the casing.

    • 6

Remove the air filter cover and then pull out the air filter. Remove the two screws running through the middle of the carburetor that hold the air filter housing in place using an Allen wrench. This will give you access to the carburetor.

    • 7

Disconnect the fuel lines from the carburetor and then remove the throttle linkage from the carb with a pair of pliers. Remove the single remaining screw holding the carburetor in place with a screwdriver.
