How to Crimp Sheet Metal With a Crimper Tool

Sheet metal crimping tools are predominantly used by HVAC technicians to fit sheet metal duct work together. Two types of crimper can be used for this purpose. One is a handheld crimper that has a flat face and is used to crimp square ducts, and another is a round crimper used to crimp rounded ducts. Both are equally effective and work the same way. The only difference is in what type of duct they work together on.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the sheet metal firmly in your hand. If it's a round duct, place it on the ground with the edge of the duct down so that you can easily crimp the opposite edge.

    • 2

Position the sheet metal crimping pliers so that the edge of the duct is between the two jaws.

    • 3

Squeeze the handles of the crimper together firmly until the sheet metal is formed to the shape of the jaws. Once you have crimped the metal, move over the pliers to an uncrimped spot and perform the same operation. Continue crimping the metal until the sheet metal is completely uniformly crimped.
