How to Drill Into Concrete Reinforced Floors

When completing a home improvement project that involves drilling into a reinforced concrete floor, the process is similar to drilling a hole into wood. But you cannot use a standard drill and drill bit. Reinforced concrete contains rebar or wire mesh embedded inside it to provide added strength. Use a hammer drill, which is a type of drill that hammers the concrete as it drills the holes. Use a masonry drill bit that can also cut through metal in case you hit the reinforcing bars in the floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the stop on the drill so the drill bit will drill 1/4 inch beneath the screw or bolt you will install.

    • 2

Mark the locations on the floor where you are drilling the holes.

    • 3

Switch the setting on the drill to "Hammer" mode.

    • 4

Place the tip of the drill bit onto the first mark, holding the drill so the bit is perfectly vertical (use the level on the drill as a guide).

    • 5

Grip the handle on the side of the drill that holds the depth stop in place and squeeze the trigger to start the drill. Apply moderate pressure to the drill but let the drill do the work. Drill until you reach the desired depth.

    • 6

Pull the drill bit out while keeping the bit spinning; pull it straight up to prevent making the hole wider than you intend. Wipe the dust away from the hole.
