How to Make Mortar Mix for Capping a Wall

Wall caps are the decorative tops of brick or stone walls. The caps themselves can be any form of masonry or stucco. Mortar is the adhesive substance used to piece masonry together. It is used in the joints of brickwork, the production of stone walls, and to keep wall caps in place. Mixing mortar yourself will ensure that you create the correct thickness, and that the ingredients are the proper ratios.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a clean wheelbarrow next to the wall. Once you mix the mortar you need to use it within the hour, so mix it near the worksite.

    • 2

Fill the wheelbarrow halfway with two parts brickie's sand to one part Portland cement. Mix the two ingredients with a shovel.

    • 3

Have a helper slowly begin pouring in drinking water. Drinking water is best because it lacks impurities that may weaken the mortar.

    • 4

Stir the water into the cement and sand mixture with the shovel as the other person pours the water in. Continue adding water and stirring until the mortar has the consistency of a creamy paste. It is then ready for use capping the wall.
