How to Use a Button Snap Tool on Sheet Metal

Use a button-snap tool fitted with self-piercing grommet dies to set grommets into sheet metal. Grommets are used to affix two pieces of sheet metal together in construction projects. Self-piercing grommet dies eliminate the need to predrill holes in the sheet metal. The dies cut through the metal, then the grommet is set in place with the squeeze of a handle.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the self-piercing grommet anvil dies by inserting the top die into the upper die-mounting hole. Twist while pushing up to get it to go into the hole. Insert the bottom die onto the plunger post of the button-snap tool by twisting and pushing it down onto the post.

    • 2

Insert the cap of the grommet into the bottom jaw or the grommet rolling end, and place the stud of the grommet over it.

    • 3

Push the rubber retainer ring of the self-piercing die down around the edge of the grommet and washer located on the top and button-snap tool jaws.

    • 4

Close the handle and screw the end bolt located at the bottom of the handle to make the two dies move toward each other in the tool jaws. Stop turning the end bolt when they touch.

    • 5

Slide the tool jaws over the sheet metal where you want to install the grommet. Apply firm, even pressure and squeeze the handle. When the grommet cuts through the metal, you will hear or feel it pop.

    • 6

Turn the end bolt once to change the pressure of the jaws, so that the outer edges of the grommet and washer of the snap tool do not cut through the sheet metal. Squeeze the handle of the tool and apply firm, even pressure to set the grommet top into the post.

    • 7

Unscrew the bolt to loosen the dies and remove the tool from the sheet metal.
