How to Install a Collet Closer

A collet consists of a metal sleeve on a hollow tube with a conical end that is segmented by slits. The collet is tightened by a chuck or closer to make a collar around a drill bit or other machine tool. A collet closer is holds the bit in place by exerting a strong clamping force on the bit. Install a collet closer on your lathe to use different types of bits.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the lathe and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Remove the chuck from the spindle. Wipe down the collet adapter with a clean soft cloth.

    • 2

Unscrew the cover knobs from the lathe and pull off the end cover. Remove the lower mounting stud, a large cylinder with a threaded bolt section on the end located in the center of the lathe, near the bottom of the machine, under the gears. Insert the replacement mounting stud for the collect closer. Replace the cover and cover knobs.

    • 3

Pull the pivoting rod connector out of the drawtube assembly of the old mounting stud and screw it onto the new mounting stud's threaded bolt end, which will be sticking out of a hole located on the side of the lathe. Hand tighten the pivoting rod connector, then tighten it further with a wrench until it will not longer turn.

    • 4

Take out the hub adapter from the drawtube assembly. Unscrew the hex-head setscrews with an Allen wrench to make the ends of the screws line up with the outer side edge of the hub. Screw the hub adapter onto the outboard side of the lathe spindle. Tighten the hex setscrews to secure it in place.

Remove the locking yoke and connecting rod that is attached to the drawtube by loosening the hex setscrews with an Allen wrench. Insert the drawtube assembly into the outboard spindle. Insert the collet into the collet adapter, so that the collet threads sticking out of the back end of the adapter. Steady the adjusting hub with your left hand while you screw the collet adapter assembly into the front of the spindle with your right hand. Turn the collet five complete turns to hand tighten it.

Screw the connecting rod and locking yoke onto the pivoting rod connector. Place the handle on the locking yoke. Move the locking yoke, located on the end of the connecting rod, up to the drawtube assembly. Attach the locking yoke to the assembly with the hex setscrews and an Allen wrench. Tighten the nuts with a wrench to finish installing the collet closer onto your lathe.
