How to Use a Metal Brake Machine

Metal brake machines are purpose-designed tools used to bend or crease sheet metal. Metal brakes are the most efficient means of bending sheet metal, but they are not that common outside of industrial operations or hobbyists who frequently work with sheet metals. Commercial metal brakes can be used to bend thicker sheets, but brakes built for home workshops can bend metal up to 12 gauge. Though metal brake machines may be cost inhibiting for a do-it-yourself craftsman who only infrequently bends sheet metal, they are an excellent choice if manipulating sheet metal is an everyday activity in your shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the bend point on the sheet metal.

    • 2

Open the brake by lifting the handles on each end. Slide the metal between the upper press plate and the main body of the machine.

    • 3

Align the bend point with the inner most lip of the brake body.

    • 4

Press the handles down completely, and lock the upper plate in the closed position.

    • 5

Reach underneath the sheet metal and grip the lower handles on the body of the brake. Pull up on the handles. This will bend the metal. Continue until the bend is satisfactory.

    • 6

Push the lower handles down, and lift the upper press plate using the main handles. Remove the sheet metal.
