How to Test Scaffolding

Scaffolding is a temporary structure built to allow workers safe access to high elevations. It is usually a modular system of pipes, ladders, boards and railings that are pieced together to provide a flat work space. Scaffolding can be a few feet or several stories high. Testing and inspecting scaffolding is a critical part of keeping the structures safe. Those assembling and inspecting scaffolding are required to be "competent persons" as defined by the rules of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Instructions

    • 1

Check to ensure that the scaffolds and scaffold components are loaded below their maximum rated capacities. Guidance on these criteria can be found in the OSHA regulations.

    • 2

Inspect all scaffold parts, poles, supports, ladders and railings to ensure nothing is damaged or weakened. If you find or suspect that anything is weakened, repair or replace it immediately.

    • 3

Check all scaffolding clearances to ensure no power or utility lines could come into contact with the scaffolding or workers while they're on the scaffolding.
