How to Use a Sheet Metal Nibbler

A metal nibbler is a cutting tool used to cut grooves and patterns into metal objects, including sheet metal. Unlike a pair of tin snips, a nibbler contains a rotating blade or bit that cuts through metal without fraying the edges. Nibblers come in two styles; power and manual. Power nibblers are either electric or pneumatic and manual nibblers are hand operated.

Instructions

  1. Power Nibbler

    • 1

Draw or trace a design onto the sheet metal with a marker. These are the cutting lines.

    • 2

Power on the nibbler and squeeze the trigger. Before you touch the sheet metal with the nibbler, the nibbler must be running at full speed.

    • 3

Hold the nibbler horizontal to the surface of the sheet metal.

    • 4

Move the nibbler into the sheet metal. The blade should make contact with the sheet metal.

    • 5

Push the nibbler forward and follow the cutting line. Let the nibbler do the work; do not push with force.

    Manual Nibbler

    • 6

Drill a hole about 1/8 inch in front the edge of the sheet metal. Use a small drill bit, between 3/16 inch and 5/16 inch.

    • 7

Position the nibbler against the edge of the sheet metal so the tip of the nibbler touches the hole.

    • 8

Squeeze the handle of the nibbler to contract the blade and cut the sheet metal. Continue cutting along the cut lines.
